LaVerne Elizabeth Sargeant, MD, born on November 9, 1953 in Washington, DC, was the third of four children of Stanley C. Sargeant and Clara B. Armstead Sargeant.  She received her bachelors at Harvard University and her medical degree at Howard University College of Medicine.
Specializing in internal medicine, LaVerne completed her residency as an emergency physician at DC General Hospital.  She later joined the Veterans Affairs Medical Center where she advanced to Chief of the Emergency Department.LaVerne truly had a special relationship with our lord.  She loved to fish, swim, horseback ride and travel, but her true passion was in the field of medicine where she dedicated her life.
On February 15, 2005 LaVerne was diagnosed with stage four cancer.  Although she was only given months to live, LaVerne’s faith in God and commitment to medicine helped her battled this diseased for over 5 years and 13 days.Those that knew LaVerne understood that she was a very private person.  She was blessed with a lifelong friend, family, relatives who loved her, friends and scores of medical colleagues.  She strived to know every attribute of God and shared love and forgiveness regularly.Laverne is survived by her sisters and brother, Natasha Pederson, Yvonne Edwards, Stanley Sargeant and her nieces and nephews, Justin and Sean Pederson, Kyle and Kimberly Edwards, Sofia LaVerne Sargeant and scores of other loving relatives and friends.
